The 1970's marked some moments in history that are forever etched in our the minds. The September 1972 hostage crisis at the summer Olympic games in Berlin where five members of the Palestinian terrorists group Black September took nine Israeli athletes hostage demanding the release of political prisoners by the Israeli government. There plan didn't work and in the end all nine hostages had been killed along with their captors and one police officer. The Beatles called it quits in April of 1970 and released their final album "Let It Be" one month later. Ohio National Guard members shot and killed four students at Kent State University in May of 1970 as they demonstrated on campus against the Vietnam war. Charles Manson and three of his so called "family" members went on trial on June 16th,1970 for their roles in the brutal and calculated murders of actress Sharon Tate and three others at her home in Los Angeles on August 9th,1969. Richard Nixon resigned as the country's 37th president on August 9th,1974 after it was determined that his administration played a key role in the break-in of the Democratic National Headquarters(aka Watergate) in Washington D C. The Vietnam War came to an official end in April of 1975 after nearly twenty years and the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Aaron Presley passed away in Memphis on August 16th,1977. Now that we've had a brief history lesson on some of the newsworthy events that filled the airwaves and were splashed across the front pages of newspapers during that decade lets take a look at some of the perfumes that women loved to wear in the 70's.
Chanel No.19. Created as Gabrielle Chanel's signature scent this perfume gets its name from her birthday which was August 19th. Launched in 1971 by the House Of Chanel and created by perfumer Henri Robert this perfume was a rich bold blend of green and white flowers as well as rose,iris,vetiver,oak moss and leather. A very seductive fragrance that was referred to in ads as "Devastatingly Feminine."
Charlie by Revlon. Released in 1973 this perfume was created to compete with a popular perfume at the time Estee by Estee Lauder. Targeting a younger more progressive female audience with its modearte price Charlie became immensely popular and within three years of its launch had become the worlds top selling perfume. The television ads featured such models as Shelley Hack and Naomi Sims and later on Cindy Crawford and Lauren Hutton. Classified as a Floral/Aldehyde this perfume featured succulent notes of lemon blossom and peach on top with middle notes of rose and lily-of -the-valley and base notes of musk,cedar and vanilla.
Loves Baby Soft by Dana. Launched in 1974 Loves Baby Soft was a gentle,clean,powdery fragrance with a baby type scent. The scent was just strong enough to create a shadowy line between innocent and sexy. Notes of geranium,jasmine,rose,lavender,patchouli,vanilla and musk combined to make a perfume that women simply loved "Because Innocent Is Sexier Than You Think."
Lily-Of-The-Valley by Penhaligon's. Launched in 1976 this perfumes name is derived from the flower that is often associated with love,tenderness,innocence and faith and was the favorite flower of Russian composer Tchaikovsky. This floral green fragrance was created by Michael Pickthall and contained notes of bergamot and geranium on top lily-of-the-valley,rose,ylang-ylang and jasmine in the middle and a dry down featuring sandalwood and oak moss. Sweet and fresh this perfume is considered by industry experts as one of the best examples ever of a Lily-Of-The-Valley perfume.
Cinnabar by Estee Lauder. An Oriental/Spicy fragrance released in 1978 and still going strong. Cinnabar is a tribute to spicy notes with its cloves,cinnamon and incense. A warm and mysterious scent whose spices linger softly in the air as they gently envelop your senses. "Cinnabar is a fragrance that fulfills every woman's yearning for the exotic and mysterious." Estee Lauder.
So there you have five popular women's perfumes from the decade of the 70's. There were others such as Cristalle by Chanel, Diorella by Christian Dior and Lauren by Ralph Lauren to name just a few.
